Tour Ride To Be Bigger Than Ever
3rd December 2008
It’s already at record levels, but the Mutual Community Challenge Tour is about to get even bigger following the decision to remove the limit of 5000 participants.
Premier Mike Rann today announced the measure, which will allow ALL cycling fans interested in being part of the event to take part in the Tour Down Under’s official recreational ride.
"We have nearly reached the cap of 5000 riders – five weeks ahead of the official deadline for entries,” Premier Rann says.
“That is an absolutely amazing achievement and shows that level of interest that Lance Armstrong’s involvement in next year’s Tour has generated.
“Given the significance of the 2009 Tour Down Under, we want everyone who wishes to ride the Mutual Community Challenge Tour to be able to do so.
“I am delighted that Tour Down Under organisers and South Australia Police have agreed to remove the cap, allowing more cyclists to take part.
“The safety of all participants is the top priority for organisers and, allowing more people to officially register for the ride, will allow adequate safety precautions to be taken.
“Attracting Lance Armstrong to South Australia for the Tour Down Under has been a major coup for the State, and we’ve seen a big rise in people wanting to be a part of the event.”
The Mutual Community Challenge Tour will be held on Friday 23 January 2009. Participants will ride the same Stage 4 route as the professionals, including Lance Armstrong.
There are three distances to suit different cycling abilities:
Option 1 155km Burnside Village to Angaston (start at 6.30am)
Option 2 97km Mt Pleasant to Angaston (start at 7.30am)
Option 3 32km Angaston to Angaston (start at 10.00am)
Inspector Tony Crameri of the South Australia Police says: “Motorists are urged to take extra care with the large numbers of cyclists on the roads at this time.
“We ask drivers to allow plenty of room when passing cyclists and to be patient when travelling behind cyclists.”
The Tour Down Under, to be held from 18-25 January 2009, is the first stop on the world cycling calendar. Visit www.tourdownunder.com.au to register before Friday 9 January.
